5 Things I Learned this Christmas

Wednesday, December 26, 2018

Yesterday was our first Christmas in our new home and our first Christmas all alone. We stayed at home all day, we got up when we wanted and we made dinner, for ourselves, from scratch. It was magical. The first Christmas in your first ever, brand new, owned home is something you will never get again so I'm really glad we ended up staying in and making it special. ...But, as usual, there were a few things I learned along the way.

Turkeys are expensive
Yep, that really is my first point, you didn't read it wrong. Kallum and I were so shocked at how expensive the Turkeys were, when we were last minute shopping in the supermarket! There's only two of us, we I don't eat a lot. Yet it still cost us over £10 for this teeny little turkey crown! Give me a £3 cook-in-the-bag chicken any day!

It's just a 'Sunday Dinner'
Reality is, 'Christmas Dinner' is just a roast dinner with a few extras. Yet there feels like there is so much pressure! What if the stuffing burns? What if I forget to put the Yorkshires in? (note: I did forget to put the Yorkshires in). It really doesn't matter. Christmas will not be ruined just by a few niggles with the roast!

Christmas Dinner > Roast
That being said, I have cooked about 20 roast dinners so far this year and yet the pressure of it made me feel like I had no idea what I was doing! You suddenly feel like your timings are going to be wrong and it's going to end up like the Christmas Special of the Royal Family with everyone eating Carrot Crush.

The pots will be never ending
Luckily for us, we didn't bother with starters which made a little less mess, however the washing up just seemed to be constant. We worked as a perfect team yesterday which made it so much easier and meant all pots where done and away before we even had dessert but honestly, I think I'm due a new bottle of washing up liquid after all that scrubbing!

It was perfect
Even with the huge price at Tesco till, the never ending pots and the fear of Christmas vs. Sunday dinner. It was all perfect and I wouldn't have changed it for the world. No matter what could have happened, Christmas is what you make it and who you make it with so none of it really matters in the end. Eat, Drink & be Merry!

Here's to our first Christmas in our new home, our first Christmas as our own little family and the last Christmas with different surnames. From our family to yours, I hope you had a very Merry Christmas.
