5 things to consider when decorating

Tuesday, November 17, 2020

As many of you will know, we have been slowly decorating our new build home since moving into it over 2 years ago. Some rooms have had major over hauls and others have been simple changes but never the less there are always things to consider. Now, I'm no interior designer but I do love redecorating so today I just thought I'd share some things we always keep in mind when mixing up a room.

Colour Scheme

This is obviously quite a big one as it sets your whole theme for the room. Are you wanting to keep the walls quite neutral and keep the colour in the accessories or are you going all out bold? Something to keep in mind when choosing your colour scheme is a rough idea of how long you plan for the room to stay that way. For example, if you paint a wall a bright colour - are you likely to be able to change it when you get bored or are you hoping for something that will last a little more long term? Will the colour you choose make the room feel warm or cold? The colour sets the whole mood!

Mood/Vibe

Next, what kind of vibe are you going for? This leads on from colour really well as if you're after a warm and cosy vibe - stark white walls with pale blue accessories probably isn't going to pull that vibe off for you. As well as colour, accessories are really great for getting the mood across - if you're going boho you may want to add more beige colours and throw in some plants where as if you're going for a more modern theme you might want undercabinet lighting and a monochrome colour scheme.

Layout

The layout of a room can really make a huge difference to the feel of it. For example, in our living room we have a corner sofa - so far we have had this in 3 different places and each one gives the room a completely different feel. Deciding a layout is important for having a space that works best for you and will really set you up for what new pieces you are after and where they need to go. Something else to consider here is, where are your plug sockets? You may have to compromise on layout or get some extension cables on the go to create your dream space!

Recycling

What can you recycle from your current space and put into your new one? Is there something from another room that would look good in here? There is also the option of upcycling furniture to keep the cost down too - you'll be amazed at what you can find for free on facebook marketplace! Redecorating doesn't always have to cost an arm and a leg and can still have amazing results. The painting that used to hang in our living room now looks great at the top of the stairs and no one has said a thing about us reusing it elsewhere!

Budget

Last but not least, budget! As mentioned above, redecorating doesn't have to cost a tonne to be effective. You don't have to spend above your means to create something really amazing. Whether it's using bits you've already got around the house, picking items up for free and upcycling them or getting yourself the high street dupe - you really can achieve anything you put your mind to! We always keep our leftover paint in the shed for any future projects too - even if you don't think you'll use it on a wall it might come in handy to paint a shelf or repurpose a table perhaps!

So there we have just 5 things I can think of off the top of my head to consider when decorating! Let me know, can you think of anymore? What room are you next looking at to redecorate?
