Kitchen Makeover

Tuesday, October 8, 2019

We have lived in our house for a little over a year now and other than adding a few cushions here and there or putting out a few ornaments, we haven't done anything in the form of decorating. Or should I say, we hadn't up until a couple of weeks ago.

Although we bought a new build, we didn't get to choose paint, tiles or flooring as we were too far into the development process, so our house is literally a blank canvas of magnolia walls, cream carpets and flat grey lino. As nice as that can be, I definitely wanted it to feel more homely and more 'us'. This is also our first ever owned property so its understandable that we want to go wild and make it our own. Starting with the kitchen...

As we have just had our wedding, we were kindly gifted various bits and pieces/vouchers from friends and family which have really been amazing in helping us start to decorate. We are so grateful and I just want to mention that before I go any further into the makeover. Our dinnerware set, bin, kettle, toaster and paint were all really generously paid for (wedding gifted), for us, so we really didn't have to buy too much to finish it off.

Now I know I mentioned plain walls and flooring and we haven't steered too far away from that in the kitchen but I just wanted the kitchen to look really clean and clutter free! In the year we have lived here our worktops had started to get more and more cluttered with various appliances so it was time to strip it back to basics.

Kettle - Russell Hobbs (Bought with John Lewis gift card from family member). T,C,S Cannisters - Next (Bought with gift card from bridesmaids parents).

We knew straight away that we wanted to changed the flooring as it was laid SO badly and the quality wasn't great. When we were shopping for our paint in B&Q we stumbled across this stunning wood effect vinyl and fell in love straight away! What makes it even better is that Kal actually laid it all himself - win! Speaking of paint - I knew I wanted a feature wall and had a vision of a glitter wall. Nothing to garish just a really nice sparkle in the light. After browsing the internet I thought it wasn't going to be doable as everything looked overly glittery or too much hard work. However, when we went to B&Q I found a whole rack full of feature wall glitter paints and although a little sceptical, I knew I wanted to give it a try! Lucky for me, Kal is fairly chill and said go for it and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out!

Glitter paint - B&Q (bought with gift cards from family friend). Mirrors - Ikea.
Sorry about the lighting - this is the only pic I have taken in daylight so it's a bit off compared to the others.
Minus a little bit of painting that Kals sister helped us with (I didn't want to do the edges, oops) we managed to do this completely on our own and everything was paid for by ourselves other than the gift vouchers we were given for our wedding presents. We are so grateful and now absolutely adore our kitchen!

Bin - John Lewis (bought with gift card from family member). Mirrors - Ikea. Drop Leaf Table - Ikea. Coasters - Gift from family. Plant - Sainsburys.

Flooring - B&Q. Clock - Ikea. Wine Rack - Amazon.

There we have it - our 'new' kitchen. I even did a bit of cleaning and rearranging in the cupboards so it all felt completely refreshed. We are so proud of out little home and what we have achieved and now can't wait to put our own touches on the rest of the house too! Stay tuned for more makeover posts!
